This first chapter presents the importance of European projects for our area and introduces the Guide’s objective: to understand the scope, operation and general structure of European funding, providing the tools and information useful for further study.

It next illustrates the “raison d’être” of European projects from the perspective of the funding bodies (the European institutions), the major types of funding that exist, and the basic considerations useful in sifting through the potential and limitations of the opportunity they represent.
