Media, artists (in all forms of artistic expression: fine arts, performing arts, literature, etc.), cultural, museum and creative organizations within and outside the EU, industry and networks in film, music and digital creations, etc.

Description and objectives

Cultural and creative sectors and cultural diversity are part of European identity and values, express them and contribute to employment and growth. Market fragmentation between countries limits their potential, the emergence of transnational artistic creation, the cross-border circulation of content, and the mobility of professionals and creators.

The Creative Europe program promotes European cooperation to preserve this cultural and linguistic diversity and maximize the potential of Europe’s cultural and creative sectors by providing opportunities for operators to develop technologically and artistically innovative cross-border initiatives and business and partnership models to exchange, co-produce and distribute European works and make them accessible to a wide and diverse audience. 

The specific objectives of Creative Europe are: 

  • Safeguard, develop and promote European cultural and linguistic diversity and heritage;
  • Increase the competitiveness and economic potential of the cultural and creative sectors, especially the audiovisual sector.

Specifically, the program aims to:

  • Strengthen the economic, social and external dimensions of cooperation in arts and culture at the European level, promote diversity and strengthen competitiveness;
  • Promoting the competitiveness and scalability of the European audiovisual industry;
  • Promoting political cooperation.

The activities and beneficiaries of the Creative Europe program are supported by Creative Europe Desks, based nationally and territorially (in Italy, in Rome, Turin and Bari) and organized by component (Culture Office and Media Offices).

Types of actions and projects

The Creative Europe program funds:

  • Actions that promote excellence in the field of culture; 
  • Projects aimed at the development of innovative audiovisual content; 
  • support for the media sector, the promotion of pluralism and media literacy;
  • cross-border collaboration initiatives in these areas;
  • initiatives to reward the achievements and excellence of practitioners;
  • initiatives that improve the visibility of Europe’s artistic heritage and cultural and audiovisual sectors.

The Creative Europe program is divided into three main components:

  • The Media subprogram:supports the development and production of innovative audiovisual content, the distribution and promotion of transnational European works, and the development of transnational networks and audiences. Supports European cinema and other audiovisual industries through funding for the development, promotion and distribution of European works in Europe and beyond. It also helps to promote European talent through training programs, film education, and heritage appreciation and enjoyment;
  • The Culture subprogram:supports cultural, artistic and creative sector initiatives and promotes cross-border cooperation, platforms, networking and literary translation. In this component, the program focuses on cooperative arts projects, platforms and networks to share and promote works and opportunities, and internationalization through mobility of people and transnational activities of cultural and creative organizations;
  • The intersectoral strand:to harness the potential for collaboration between different cultural and creative sectors and to address their common challenges. It particularly addresses the issues of political cooperation, media, and cross-border collaboration in media.
